Proposed Olive Oil Research and Promotion Program

Background

Members of the olive oil industry submitted a draft proposal to the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) for a promotion, research, and information program covering olive oil. AMS received a draft Order and support document in December 2024.

The purpose of the program would be to maintain and expand markets by funding promotion, research, and information programs to increase consumption, to develop new markets and marketing strategies, to increase market efficiency, and to enhance the image of olive oil in the United States. Handlers and importers of olive oil would pay eight cents ($0.08) per gallon of olive oil handled or imported. Handlers and importers who handle or import less than 5,000 gallons on an annual basis are exempt. If established, this program would be implemented under the Commodity Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 1996.
